What to do with your hands?

Bags and pouches, worn at the waist in the Middle Ages, moved over time under the top layers of clothing for protection against theft. As the centuries passed and fashion changed, handbags hidden in the folds of clothing became an integral part of ... men's outfits - as pockets. Men, as the more mobile section of society, sometimes had a great many of them - adapted by their depth and size to accommodate different types of contents.

Women had to cope differently, as their outfits, both formal and everyday, had no or very few pockets (sometimes strictly decorative). The 18th century saw the emergence of the small handbag called the reticule, which is the great-grandmother of all handbags as we know them. It was a response to empire-style dresses-columns, narrow and close to the body, in whose folds nothing could be hidden. It became indispensable for two important reasons - it stored essential items when the lady left the house, and it responded to the age-old human need to 'do something with your hands'.

It wasn't until the 1920s, with the liberation of women from corsets, that outfits with large pockets appeared. Big enough that satisfied ladies could finally stroll around with their hands in their pockets, but that's another story....

Forever together

Handbags have stayed with us for good and are certainly not a symbol of any lack today. On the contrary. They are a desirable and fashionable accessory, and some of them can cost cosmic money. Still, and always - they are practical and useful.

Is our large wallet with handle already a handbag? .
It already is. It's roomy enough that we can fit many things in there besides money and documents. A couple of slices just in case, a flyer from that good pizzeria, earrings, a letterbox key and those twelve receipts that are better kept for a while - too.

The most expensive Easter egg in the world

The world's most expensive handbag was made from an emu egg, which was decorated with blue diamond dust enamel, 8,000 diamonds set in platinum and 24 carat gold, and a pair of earrings from Cartier, which served as the handbag's clasp. It all belongs to one woman who wanted to give some of her valuables a second life for the Easter holidays. The inside of the handbag is lined with an iconic scarf from Hermes, and the whole thing cost the owner $6.7 million.
The designer is Debbie Wingham, who specialises in designing "the world's most expensive items" for billionaires, including Dubai.
